Too much time, money, and energy is wasted in the pursuit of legislation that seeks to restrict and redefine the protections and privileges of the 2nd amendment. There has been no success on the part of anti-gun legislation in historical or current practice to actually prevent crime, whereas there is strong evidence that deepening gun ownership has actually helped to decrease crime. For this party to go forward in a meaningful direction, it must seek to end the filtering of taxpayer money into anti-gun organizations, and stand in firm alliance with gun owners in this country. This party must advance the idea that the second amendment is a right of the people to defend themselves against any enemy that seeks to harm them, including the government. Fear of guns is destroying much of the political and cultural heritage this great nation once enjoyed.

Government doesn't need to be the one to enforce personal responsibility. If you misuse a gun, you go to jail. They shouldn't be regulating the millions who DON'T misuse their weapons. Concentrate on punishing crimes, not the law abiding gun owners.

Those "yahoos" comprise most of the military and police force that you rely on to keep your country a safe place for you to live and voice your opinion in. Those "yahoos" represent 50-75 million registered voters, many of who belong to the Republican party.

I support the right to bear arms. We can learn from the Dems on this: during the Clinton era they strongly opposed gun owners rights, but have now become a big tent on this issue because they knew it was losing them votes. We should be similarly pragmatic about social issues like abortion and gay marriage (which is not a losing issue now, but will be in the future).

I wholeheartedly agree. After seeing the run on guns lately it is evident that the Democrats are know for the desire to confiscate firearms. The republicans have always been know for supporting the 2nd Amendment. That's why I was so confused about McCain, he did not score well with gun owners and we lost many to third parties over that mistake.

Perhaps no issue is more divisive, or has the opportunity to be more of an impetus for reconciliation than the right to bear arms. If you want to unite the base, and bring more conservatives into the fold who would otherwise vote third party or stay home; you need to put the minds of gun owners everywhere at ease. They are a large, dynamic, and fiercely loyal constituency... If you listen to them!
