Where the Party went wrong was allowing the news media play a big a role in choosing our presidential nominee. Naturally they're going to focus on the most left-leaning candidates as being the best the Party has to offer. They're going to predict, for example, that Rudy Giuliani has a better shot at being president than Ron Paul, when they couldn't be more wrong.
Ron Paul had a youth following, grass-roots support, internet presence, and a book called "The Revolution" soon to be on the best-sellers list. It was the news media that relegated him to second tier, edged him out of debates, and obscured his polling position.
The contrast between Paul and Obama is like night and day. Not so with McCain. With Ron Paul as our nominee, Barack Obama would have been in the position of saying his Republican opponent wants "too much change" or "the wrong kind of change," rather than "more of the same."
We might have nominated a new Ronald Reagan instead of a new Bob Dole. It was time to take a gamble and we hedged our bets. We had the opportunity. We made a mistake.

I resent your sweeping under the rug of McCain, a 2000 McCain would have been great to see. But I digress; the media has way to much power in all this... then again, this probably isn't a bad thing to some Republicans. :/
