Small "c" conservatives

The party must return to its roots of small government and personal freedom. The current platform of exclusion and moralism is unacceptable and will result in the destruction of the party.

The republican party should be full of fiscal conservatives of multiple religions, races, and sexual orien... more

    .

"we tried to bring them into the tent"
You mean the democrats, the socialists or the atheistic baby killing club?
Because you sure as H3LL aren't a Republican.
    Remember this quote?
"Focus on the family will help you lose more elections, so bring on the religious fundies and their TruckNUTZ!!!"

    Nice try troll!

Seriously though, if you want input, do so as a Democrat!

This is no longer a valid forum... The Evangelicals keep flagging anything related to toning down the religious right as "inappropriate" so it gets deleted. Once again, the religious extremists are taking over this forum like they did the party. I guess Republicans are doomed to lose! Anyone up for creating a new party? (This comment deleted earlier: Christians w/ an agenda must own this site)

"It wasn't the religious right that lost the election."-jeffpierson

The religious right is what has lost my vote the last 2 presidential elections along with all of the other elections between. Until their hold on the GOP's social policy wanes, the best the GOP can hope from me is to not vote for the other guy too.
I'd like to support the GOP, but some of its policies need changing first.

I have been saying this for a while. When did the republican party become and exclusive Christian fundlementalist club? I'm a long time republican and Catholic and I started to feel excluded. The republican party is sounding like the Christian version of the Taliban. Abortion, homosexuality, and flag burning is wrong because God says so is not a good argument. We need to start using logic again.

  6. If getting elected on empty campaign slogans is more important than of standing on principle, then the people will get the crappy government they deserve.

If the party is absolutely sure they don't care about Religious rights, please let them know so they can vote for the constitution party. There is no reason to lie to them and say they are on their side. When in fact, they are really Socialite party.

  8. It really was the religious right. They're a small, erratic percentage of the electorate, and they're not terribly dependable. We tried to bring them under the tent, but the problem is they're all over the place. They also get bogged down in litmus tests that kill us. The vast majority of the US just doesn't give a crap about having the 10 Commandments in the local park.

  9. It wasn't the religious right that lost the election. It was the pandering and courting of our elected officials to these groups in order hold on to their votes. The GOP needs to stay with it's focus of limited government and personal responsibilities regardless of which groups they are hoping will vote for them. If we lose our core ideals then we have nothing.

I'm a baptist and I agree with more taboo on religion. Except maybe a website such as pewforum. Faith should be between a person and God. It shouldnt be used to win votes. I don't mind people expressing their faith in their private time, or pray but constitution party would be popular by now if religion won votes. stick with the conservative and family values. It's important to alot of people

"There are NO rights denied to anyone. Same-sex couples have Domestic Partnerships, Heterosexuals have Marriage."-fdcruzr

If they are the same, they would have the same name.

Religious marriage may be between and man and woman, but civil marriage need not be confined to that definition. Because civil marriage is a government institution is must follow the equal protection clause.

and sorry, y'all, but the very word conservative big or little "c" is contaminated almost beyond recovery...

o dear what can the matter be? is the gop splitting? we shoulda seen this coming pubs. our pro-life plank has about run its course. i don't see roe v. wade flipping any time soon. gen xers want the law out of our doctors' offices. gen xers also don't care who marries whom, or what defines a family as long as those within are happy, healthy and productive. ride into the sunset, reaganites...

  15. liberlynx9-What RIGHT to marry, check the Constitution. Same-sex marriage is a oxymoron, marriage is the union of a man and a woman. In CA a Domestic Partnership is for the same-sex couple. 'Domestic Partnership' and 'Marriage' have all the same legal rights in the State of California. There are NO rights denied to anyone. Same-sex couples have Domestic Partnerships, Heterosexuals have Marriage.

Based on this comment thread, the Republican Party of the future should be the party of fricker. I guess we're done, let's go home.

  17. Heh, you may think that "change" sounded meaningless, but it worked didn't it? Chew on that one.

  18. Republicans must not fall into trap by using the word "conservative" to have a hollow meaning and no substance like the word "change" that was use by Obama's campaign. The elected official who calm to be conservative, and yet voted for the bailout and budget busting legislation, are one of the reasons why the GOP is at now.

As a recent college grad, I can confirm these statements about "the religious right" pushing people away. This doesn't mean that we should change our values, but we should emphasize issues, like the economy and the environment, that are more attractive to young voters, leaving much of the religious/cultural work to churches and cultural advocates. We are, remember, only a political party.
