If we look at all states that are capitalist, we'll find that a good many of them, if not most, are squalid and corrupt. Should we conclude that capitalism "doesn't work"? Of course not. We must consider the reason for the failure of states beyond the superficial. Prosperous states are less likely to become socialist because they have an entrenched capitalist class and a pacified working class. Poor states without established industry and without a history of stability are more likely to become socialist because the discontent of the lower classes can be more effectively mobilized and the upper classes have not established sophisticated means of public relations. Also, note that Mussolini was a fascist and a corporatist, a great friend of the capitalist class.

MY favorite kind of socialism is the one where the people are in the process of taking back over, when the "leaders" realize they are all about to be killed, dragged through the streets, and hung in the town square like Mussolini... When they realize they screwed up, and that, hmmmm, maybe socialism doesn't work and isn't such a good idea. Go to Europe and see how THEIR little "experiment in socialism" is working out for 'em. And then stay there, because we don't want/need you here.

Thank you, this is one of the few ideas that's hit the nail on the head. Sadly, this describe Clinton's administration more than any Republican administration in five decades. Fiscal conservatives don't care about your party affiliation, and it's social extremism like religious activism and this fixation on homophobia that we're tired of. It's a distraction from the real issues of America.

I think the role of the federal government has reversed itself; it used to protect american manufacturers against foreign countries who use unfair trade tactics. Now, we trade wtih everyone we can (Why is China better than Cuba, btw?) regardless of their dirty tricks. Now, you can't FIND made in America! It's all China. Meanwhile, the Feds are investigating and harrassing American businesses!!

All in all this is a good one. However defining foreign policy (International Relations, IR) as realism is short sighted. Realism is a specific IR theory that focuses on the state as a unitary actor, that means busisness, NGOs, democracy, do not matter in foreign relations. It is short sighted and died with the cold war. We need a new conservative and viable approach, focused on freedom.

In our Republic's youth, presidential candidates openly debated central banking, and Andrew Jackson even won election as a "hard-money" advocate. Today's economic crisis requires a similar return to sound monetary policy. Since we have a bailout bill that passed...and the detroit auto manufactors wants their share of the bailout...soon all will join this circle...how far do we go?
